Roadmap for Upgrading to MicroStation CONNECT Edition
Nobody likes change.

While it is inevitable, we often push off change until we absolutely have no other choice. And for many of the clients we work with, this has been their attitude towards MicroStation CONNECT Edition thus far.

Hopefully, you have seen many reasons why you should migrate to MicroStation CONNECT and are already formulating a plan. From the automation of sheet creation and annotation to the latest supported file formats, there are plenty of reasons why you should upgrade. Even upgrading just for the Place Table tool alone is worth it.

But this roadmap focuses on how you should migrate to MicroStation CONNECT. We have developed this guide to help break down the entire process into bite-sized chunks with a lot of do’s and don’ts along the way. Creating a migration plan is vital to successfully upgrading to MicroStation CONNECT and this roadmap will point you in the right direction.

Take inventory of your current stock

This means investigating your current environment to see what is being used and who is using it. Some key questions that are helpful to answer:

1. What products are currently being used, including other Bentley products and 3rd-party add-ons?

2. What OS version is running on the users’ computers?

3. How many different versions of MicroStation are currently running across all users?

4. Do you have a custom V8i environment with custom tools or macros being used?

Do understand that MicroStation CONNECT Edition only runs on 64-bit operating systems, so your users need to be running at least Windows 7 or above.

Don’t assume all 3rd-party applications will just automatically work with CONNECT. Check with the developer and ask if they have tested their product on MicroStation CONNECT.

Do ask your users what tools and commands they are using that aren’t out-of-the-box MicroStation commands.

Find out what you need

Completing a needs analysis sounds complicated. But now that we know what we have after taking inventory, we can make an informed list of needs moving forward.

More than likely some of the V8i workflows have been superseded by new technology in CONNECT. Now it is time to do some spring cleaning on that V8i Workspace folder. Clearing out any old or unused data will make the migration step easier to manage and ensure you are spending time only on resources that matter moving forward.
